The Romance Of Kilims

Pottery Barn
Kilims! I'm in love with them right now!

When I was in NYC, I took note of Ralph Lauren's California Romantic room, and how he used them layered everywhere, even draped over the coffee table. I was smitten!

High Gloss Magazine
Lately, I've noticed them a lot in kitchens, like this one designed by Jamie Meares.

I now have a kilim in my kitchen, and I love the new look. It is actually an indoor/outdoor rug from Pottery Barn. Just hose it off if it gets dirty!

House and Home
Kilims look great in traditional rooms, as well as contemporary rooms.

I like how Peter Dunham designed this library/dining room and anchored it with an antique kilim rug. It's the pop of color that this otherwise dark and monochromatic room needed.

Not all kilims are tribal designs. Some are floral, like this brown Bessarabian Kilim in our Asti guest house. Layered over the cement floor, it lends a little romance to the sitting room.

House and Home
Old Kilims make great upholstery for ottomans and cushions....

Ralph Lauren
....as well as great pillows like Ralph used in this rustic outdoor setting.

Kathryn Ireland used kilims as runners in this outdoor loggia.
I think this looks absolutely amazing!

I love it so much that I ordered the large version of my new PB indoor/outdoor kilim that is in my kitchen for the pool house loggia in Asti. It arrived yesterday, so stay tuned.

Wishing everyone a fabulous holiday weekend!

  3. Dearest Delores,

Kilims (Kelims we call them) and other rugs are being used in Europe a lot for coffee table cover and for all sort of rooms.
Works great for anyone without pets I guess.
Noticed that your followers don't show either; mine got back but I posted about saving your blog from loosing it forever as that happened to several bloggers.
    Have a Happy Memorial Weekend!

    Lots of love,

  6. I recognized the Ralph Lauren porch right away. Gorgeous.
I would definitely need a hose off rug for my kitchen. Good grief do we spill around here. Not good for the hardwood floors.

  8. I share your love of these rugs, I have several scattered throughout my home. I am thinking of something new for my kitchen and I think I'll head to pottery barn. The idea of easily hosing off sounds fabulous. Thanks for the info......

  11. Delores, Love the color and design of Kilims, hate the scratchiness. The PB indoor/outdoor one is really pretty.. love the colors and what a great thing for the kitchen. Certainly better than my faux oriental rugs in the kitchen. :) They take such a beating with spills.
    Have a great weekend,
    Babs

  12. Love the idea of indoor outdoor for a kitchen!!! I'm off to do some shopping, as the kilim in our bedroom wouldn't be suited to spills! Thanks for the great idea. I can't wait to see your rooms!

  15. Delores,
We have pillows made from Kilms on the lower level family room from Pottery Barn years ago. They are one of the main items we used as a spring board for our color scheme and overall decor.I still adore them today! Thank you for this lovely, inspiring post. Now I'm off to see those rugs at Pottery Barn!
    Fondly,
    Pat
