Monet's Grande Allee and more.....

Monet's garden at Giverney is such an inspiration to me. I have been there three times, but never in fall or winter. When people think of Monet's garden, they think of the lily pond. But I think of the Grande Allee. Here it is in winter.

Here it is in spring looking toward Monet's house.

In late summer, Nasturtiums trail across the path.

I was so inspired by Monet's garden that I built my own "grande allee" in our backyard and planted Cecile Brunner roses to climb up and over. To create the allee, I used nine arbors and spaced them apart. These Monet like arbors can be purchased at Kinsman Garden Co.

When we bought our vacation home in the wine country, it came with this arbor path. Concord and Thompson seedless grapes climb up and over.

This arbor can be found at Araujo Vineyards in Napa County.

I found a photo of the walkway at the National Gardens in Athens. It reminds me of our Sonoma style arbor. Another garden to put on my list to visit!

If you ever get a chance to visit Giverny, you won't be disappointed. For more information about Giverny and Monet's home and garden, click here.

  3. I am not a fan of the lily pond. I would much prefer to walk along the allee...yours or Monets.

  4. I will be heading there the first week of April, after a week in Paris. I wonder what it will look like then? I will be sure to take many photos and post them when I return.

  5. p.s I am new to your blog. I live in the Asheville area of NC. We spent a week in the wine country 6 years ago and fell in love. My favorite town was Healdsburg. We look forward to returning one day.

  6. Delores, both of your allees are comparable to the others you posted. Oh how I love the roses growing over the one at your home and the grapes over the one at your vacation home. It all looks so storybook romantic. laurie

  8. I think your home with the rose arbor alley is just so inspiring. I'm at loss on finding craftmen in South Florida to do a brink path like that. The paver work I've had done around my home is poorly done. By that I mean they use just roughly hand poured concrete to hold the sides in place. Yours looks like they may have used a nice straight metal form to align their edges with. I know lawn and soil cover many mistakes but eventually the concrete cracks and crumbles. Why do men never pay attention to the details? It drives me mad!

  9. Stunning photos. Your grande alee and arbor path are very beautiful. Love the rose climbers. The photo of the nasturtiums creeping across the path is lovely; did you take it?

Can you believe it's still raining!? Feels like the pacific northwest ha!

    Cheers,

  24. HI Delores,
Oh those pictures of Monet's garden are lovely, someplace that has been on my travel wish list for such a long time now! But your gardens are just as beautiful, the grape vines are wonderful, and I know with the roses blooming it must be heavenly. Bet they don't look too good after all this cold and rain, though!(My front trellis looks so sad right now, the cecil brunners are fighting for their lives!)
I hope you are feeling better really soon - take good care and stay warm and dry. Thanks for visiting!
