It's time to pull out the Christmas china and set the table!
Most of us are familiar with this Christmas Tree pattern from Spode. Introduced in 1938, it has become the world's most recognizable and best loved Christmas china. Some of us even inherited these plates from our parents and grandparents.
Although I don't have the classic Spode plate above, I have this version called Christmas Tree Grove, also by Spode. Same tree in the middle, but the rim is what I'm in love with. It is my latest acquisition and I've promised Mr. A, it will be my last Christmas plate!

I have found that besides Ebay, Replacements, Ltd. is the best source for vintage and out of production patterns. Believe it or not, Amazon has quite a few patterns available too.
I actually like to mix and match my holiday china for a layered table. Both of the patterns from Target mix very well, and we all know that Tartan goes with everything, including transferware! This year, I'm planning to use the Spode Christmas Tree Grove and layer Tartan salad plates over them. So many possibilities!

Oh Delores, I just discovered the Christmas Tree Grove last year, and I fell in love with it! I cannot wait to see what you do with it, I can only imagine it will be spectacular! ReplyDeleteI've had the Spode Christmas tree and also inherited an additional large service, and I've been using it for years. both of my kids also have it. We start collections of it for God children and nieces. They have full sets by the time they go to college. Right now my table is set with the Lenox, "13 Original Colonies Wreath Plates." I have to admit that I've been eyeing the Tiffany, "Holiday" china. I think that's what I'll collect next. Thanks for sharing all the wonderful patterns. Merry Christmas! Cherry Kay
ReplyDeleteGreat review of these Christmas dishes...I have the Spode "Christmas Tree," which decorates the kitchen and breakfast table, and Lenox "Holiday" which is used in the dining room. My latest post shows the tablescape with Holiday dishes and linens.

Wow...I could so end up with 25 different Christmas chinas if I didn't stop myself. LOL Great patterns!

I adore Spode. Started a collection about 10 years ago so those who didn't know what to buy could just add a piece. TJ Maxx has the best prices on individual pieces once a core group has been accumulated. Dinner plates for $9.99 at most stores and salad plates for $6.99. The only pattern that displaces Blue Willow from my china cabinet is Spode Christmas Tree and each year I can't wait to change it out. Not only is it beautiful, the pieces are durable, large enough to accommodate a big meal, yet simple enough for a breakfast tablescape too. Merry Spode Christmas.

I LOVE the Spode Gove pattern. I had picked up several serving peices in Gove through the years but never saw the actual dinner plates. Leave it to you to find them!
After I saw your post with the plaid from Target I immediately went on line. You can't order them and every store near me is out of stock. They are so beautiful and layer so nicely. Lucky you to have gotten them!

When I saw Christmas Tree Grove I said to myself "I bet she has that one" and I was right. Very pretty. I think the Christmas Toile would be my favorite just for the fact that it would go very nicely with my plain red and white Christmas dishes I got at Target a few years ago. I like them in that they also do very well for Valentine's day. I know, I know, hubby should be taking me out for Valentine's day but for some reason he always asks for my pork chops and rice recipe for Valentines.....:)

Ok, if I had to pick one...I couldn't. Either Holiday or Holiday Tartan by Lenox would probably be my favorites. I don't have a sitdown dinner for Christmas...but I think I've been inspired to set a Christmas brunch table tonight for just my husband, me and two teen boys. It's so much fun to get the table all gussied up. I've enjoyed your gorgeous blog so much since I found it this fall Delores. God Bless you and yours this Christmas season.

Love looking at all the Christmas patterns. I have a Royal Doulton Tartan -- from the 80's -- there were either 3 or 4 complimenting patterns -- don't think it was in production long but it is a classic.
