ReplyDeleteThat is exactly what I'm doing tonight! A celebration of sorts for my whole family for school starting back! ( Of course, the kids don't really think it's a celebration!) But is sure a good chance to have my whole family...from my parents and sister and her family all the way down to my children and grandaughter! And yes....the good china will be on the table in the dining room for all 14 of us! Thanks for posting this! I want my children to grow up remembering this as well! by the way...my fine china is also circa 1982!

ReplyDeleteGreat idea! Too bad my family is all 250 miles away! I love your china- great taste! People are afraid to use their fine china but it's really more tough than they think! Bone china is really strong- When they found the Titanic there were dishes spewed out on the ocean floor, many not broken and in mint condition! That inspired me! Have a beautiful Sunday! Liz
ReplyDeleteWe got married around the same time. Mine is from 1981 and is yours Lenox too. Debby above... go pick a pattern now and start collecting. The friend I walk with each morning just did that and then Macy's had a buy one place setting get one free deal. She has a complete set now and just loves it.

ReplyDeleteI am with you, life is to short! I remember years ago a friend told me to get out your best and use it more often than just once or twice a year, and I took her advice and use mine.
ReplyDeleteHi Delores, You are so right about enjoying and using all the best china on any occasion or just make a simple day a perfect occasion to bring out the best china. A few years back I said to a friend that I was tired of all the sets of china I don't use enough and I started to purge some of the sets keeping my most treasured ones, allowing myself to use them daily making everyday a special occasion!
ReplyDeletePlus using your good bone china on a regular basis hardens up the ash content in the china making it stronger and better on down the line!

This is exactly one of my initiatives this year - to not only use the good stuff in the actually sense of china but to not save anything for some special occasion in the future - to try and live more in the here and now. It is like Dominique Browning's Slow Love concept - and after having spent the weekend with her (you can hear her talk about it in a little video in my latest post if you're interested), it is an idea that I am further trying to embrace.

ReplyDeleteWhen my daughter was in grade school, my husband stopped by at lunch. The children were eating at a table with placemats and china, while he ate out of a sack in the car. He said that was a good lesson in priorities...the school felt it was important to teach the children to eat with dignity!

I have 4 sets of fine china. Only one set is my wedding china. The rest I bought at very reasonable prices on craigslist. Most were pretty complete sets and I added any missing pieces through eBay. Two are Lenox which I could never afford new. I use the various china sets for different occasions and will pass them down to my three daughters one day. I love using them!

It's all so gorgeous! Your right about using your china or even good dishes. Someone once said you should let your kids use your wine glasses at dinner as they grow up so they become acustomed to enjoying the finer things in life.
ReplyDeleteWhat a short but packed full of sweet post! I'm all smiles, now. I've been locked in a struggle to raise puppies and, at the same time, move all of my china, books, knick knacks and CDs around - along with the furniture that houses them. I can't wait until everything is all settled so that I can just simply use the china again without a big to-do! (I haven't had my kitchen table for four months, now. I'm holding out for the new kitchen floor, though! =D)

Ahh, 1982 Wedding China--I use mine at Easter and other patterns other times. My family loves to eat off the good stuff.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree - my mother owned multiple sets and we ate off it every day. Didn't matter if we were eating PB&J or a bowl of cereal... of course we do the same in my house today.
