Let's Talk Turkey



Turkey plates, that is.
Here are a few classics to whet your Thanksgiving whistle!
Beginning with this wonderful, brown transferware plate by Wedgewood called "His Majesty."


Johnson Brothers has many turkey plate patterns to choose from. This one is called "Woodland Wild Turkey."
Notice the detail around the rim.


Another version of the Johnson Brothers plate, called "Woodland Turkey."
I actually found these last year at Tuesday Morning for $5.99 each!


And my all time favorite is this plate, also by Johnson Brothers, named "Wild Turkeys."
The rim is the same as my Windsorware Harvest plates and would mix nicely.
They are highly collectible and currently priced at $89.95 at Replacements.


"Barnyard King," by Johnson Brothers is a really fun plate. I'm a squirrel nut (no pun intended), so if I ever came across this in an antique store, I would definitely buy it!


Another Johnson Brothers plate, "Autumn Monarch" is splendid with the pumpkin and fall leaf border.


"Queen's Myott," by Churchill is still around. I've seen them in the past at Marshall's
and TJ Maxx!


Spode also has quite a few patterns to choose from, both vintage and new, like this one.

Spode's "Wild Turkey" plate has a lovely dark brown, almost black rim.

And finally, these plates from Pottery Barn are currently available for you to start your instant Thanksgiving plate collection, if hunting for years in antique stores, searching for that vintage pattern isn't your thing!

This year, I'll probably set the same table as I did last year, using the Johnson Brothers "Woodland Turkey" plates.

When it comes to Thanksgiving, I'm very traditional and love the Thanksgiving cliche elements. The formula that works for me is paisley or plaid, turkey plates, fall flowers, leaves and gourds, stag horn flatware and jewel tone crystal. Hey, why re-invent the wheel?

    Love those plates and wish I had some. I love the squirrel ones, too. What is it about squirrels that attracts us? They are so destructive to our house. They have chewed up our cornice board in several places. That one for $89 is gorgeous, but I guess I won't be collecting those anytime soon.

    Delores, I AGREE 100%.. your table is PERFECTION so why both to re-design for Thanksgiving... there is a lot to treasure about traditions... the table, the food, the company, and especially FAMILY!!!

    I like the traditional Thanksgiving look too. I think when you have a lot of guests for dinner, the traditional feel is what everyone expects and what makes them feel most comfortable.

    I love Barnyard King to, for the same reason...the squirrel border. I had the turkey platter and just sold it!

    I love any thing transfer ware! Brown, blue purple and black, just love it. where did you get your table cloth? Its perfect for a fall table.

    I bought the tablecloth from Pottery Barn two years ago. It is all wool and huge. Also, have a runner in the same pattern. They are reversible too! I wish they would bring them back

    I so love your thanksgivings table. It's everything I want mine to be. I think I need to start collecting a variety of the gobbler plates, they are so pretty! I too am a traditionalist on Thanksgivings.. table doesn't vary too much from the year before.. very rustic chic! Hope things are going well for you.. xo marlis

    Hi D!! Love all of these turkey plates but my fave is the one with the squirrel also!! I love little squirrels and they fascinate me when I see them in our yard!!!     Love all the turkey plates. I have the Wild Turkey one in your photo, but only the one. I found it at a consignement shop several years ago for $12, and wanted a set until I found out how expensive they are. Your Woodland Turkey" plates are so pretty and set a lovely table. Happy Thanksgiving.

    I love your table. I'm definately a sucker for the traditional look. However, I'm wondering how you serve dinner. There usually isn't a lot of room for the platters and such, so do you have a buffet/console and pass the platters around?

    Hi Dawn,
    We serve the first course )salad or soup) on the plates. When the salad is finished, I remove them, then everyone gets up with their dinner plate and serves themselves buffet style. I usually set up the buffet on the kitchen island.
    Seems more civilized that way, instead of passing all the food around.

    You inspired me! I don't usually act on something so quickly ... but I marched myself to Pottery Barn yesterday and bought 10 small turkey plates to use on my Thanksgiving Table. I have never been a fan of themes ... but truly, they make my table and actually will use these for years to come!

    I had no idea there was such a variety of turkey plates. I love them. If I were not already a dish-aholic, I would star collecting them...where to find room???

    I love your table setting and tablecloth. Guess I have to keep a closer eye on Pottery Barn. Your cloth looks like an antique. I wouldn't change a thing. Your table is perfection.

    I love those turkey plates. I have blue and white ones and saw some wonderful old English blue and white ones that I yearned for but at $95 each, I'm afraid that they didn't come home with me!

    I have the turkey plates with the squirrels on them. They were my husbands grandmothers and my mother-in-law gave them to me years ago. I only use them every few years. This year we are going to our daughters so they won't be unpacked. Happy Thanksgiving!
