Climbing New Dawn Rose In All Its Glory

The climbing New Dawn rose is in all its glory right now.
I planted one on each side of the arbor about 8 years ago, replacing a trumpet vine that could never compare to the beauty of this wonderful rose.

 This rose is a prolific bloomer and repeat performer with a sweet scent that permeates the air in the evening.  

 Add disease resistant to the list, and you pretty much have a perfect climbing rose.

 Except for the thorns--as you can see, they're brutal!  
You have to be very careful when cutting bouquets or pruning them back in the winter.

 This year, the roses have grown so heavy that they're threatening to collapse the arbor, which is starting to rot at the base.  
 I don't know what I'll do if it falls over!

If you are wondering what climbing rose to plant, I highly recommend New Dawn.
I know there are others too that compare, but seriously, how can you resist the beauty of this perfect rose!
Just make sure if you plant one, that there is plenty of support!

    Your New Dawn is gorgeous. I have one planted that isn't producing much. I think I will move it in the fall to see if it won't grace me like yours does. So pretty.

    I'm on a mission now to find the "New Dawn" rose climer. I've tried several plants for my pergola and nothing has worked. I'll give this a try. Your rose blooms are stunning! I sure hope the arbor hold until you can repair it.

    I too love this rose (it's my name after all!). I would love to plant this on a stone wall/arbor that is outside my kitchen door. I just need to think about those thorns though!

    That rose is spectacular! I don't know why I always assumed that it wasn't a repeat bloomer! I'll bet that color really goes great with your northern Cal. weather and sunlight! (to me flowers seem to just pop more up there!)

    Your New Dawn rose is gorgeous. I'm envious as we had a pair that grew over the pergola, but were so pitiful,I had them dug up and gave to a neighbor to put on their fence. I think mine were in a spot that was too hot and dry. Did you like your trumpet vine? I have one I'm thinking about putting on the pergola but can't decide.

    I love New Dawn roses. I had them in my NY garden and they were as wonderful and prolific as you say. Yours are truly fabulous.

    Delores, this rose covered arbor is perfectly romantic. I can just imagine how glorious the fragrance is. i don't have any climbing roses, so I'm going to investigate this one for growing in TX. Thanks!

    Wat een geweldige post, ik ben zelf ook helemaal weg van rozen en zeker van de New Daw, maar ik heb er 2 en beiden zijn deze winter bevroren, het heeft bij ons 2 nachten -20 gevroren , dat gebeurt niet vaak, maar helaas , ik wordt helemaal blij van jou foto's dus.

    It is wonderful to hear such a glowing report on this old rose. Dating from 1930, New Dawn has continued to be a mainstay in many antique and old garden rose gardens. And I'll tell you a secret many of the die hard exhibition rose growers also show and win with New Dawn at the rose shows they enter.
