Since moving the dining room curtains to the kitchen, I had to move the living room curtains into the dining room, leaving the living room with nothing on the four windows.
This morning, while shopping the internet, I came across these panels from Pottery Barn.
Perhaps they would look great in the living room, but also the kitchen!
And so would these, also from Pottery Barn!
While I'm not crazy about ready made curtains, these certainly have piqued my interest.
Being both lazy and frugal, I thought I could order them extra long so there is room to add my signature gathered header. Thoughts?
Also, I stand corrected. The one and only Penelope Bianchi informed me that the word "drapes," (as in the plural of drape), is the wrong word. They're curtains! Drapes is a verb, as in "the fabric drapes." All this time, I was using the word as a noun!
Curtains do sound better, I'll admit!

ReplyDeleteWell, I think most of us have been using drapes incorrectly. Nice to know. I use to always say curtains while everyone was saying drapes so I thought drapes was right.
ReplyDeletemy pick is for the first picture. BTW, I have used Pottery Barn ready made lined curtains and have been very pleased with the quality and the way they "drape".

ReplyDeleteDelores, the first set gets my vote, though they are both beautiful fabrics. I think it's a good idea to use PB if they fit and you like the fabric. I know you are going to have the windows looking fab, no matter what you decide. ~ Sarah

ReplyDeleteI like the first ones for the kitchen more than for the dining room,it looks too similar in scale to the wallpaper in the dining room. Love the pattern on the draperies. I call anything with a header a drapery and anything with a rod pocket a curtain. Not sure if that is proper or not!lol

I have the first ones as shower curtain in our master bath! I love the print and the colors in there: mid-tone beige walls and tonal sea-glass blue towels. They would be lovely as curtains too!

Is the green of your cabinets similar to the green in the curtains you had in the dining rm or from your wallpaper in your dining rm? On my comp the green on your cabinets look different in each picture, just curious (:

ReplyDeleteoh boy.. what decisions.. I love the first one. But the big question is which would look better in the room. And that, only you can decide. I will say this for PB curtains. I love them. I purchased a total of 500 inches of them and they are everything I wanted. I could have made them myself and the only difference would have been the amount of time it would have taken to make cut out the fabric and make them, oh and they would have been interlined, but I am not missing that little bit. Mind came lined and have a wonderful feel to the linen. I know that you will enjoy either one... good luck with the choice! have a wonderful week. xo marlis
ReplyDeleteI think the correct term for your window treatments is "draperies" which we have shortened into the slang term "drapes." Whatever you call them, yours are all gorgeous--new and old! I like the second set for your kitchen, especially since they appear to have some green. Linda

Their catalog has been a source of inspiration for our lower level living room time and time again!Keep in mind that fabric swatches are available and their return policy is good...except on $ale items! Both 'curtain' choices are excellent!!! I'll be back to see your final choice!

I really like the first one, the pattern isn't too busy. I bought PB panels for my kitchen and I'm pleased with them. I also ordered them longer and hemmed them myself. I like your idea to customize them.

ReplyDeleteAll dictionaries agree that "drape" is both a verb and a noun. The NOUN drape is synonymous with curtain. The Cambridge, Oxford and Webster dictionaries also state that "drape" usually refers to long "curtains" and "heavier" curtains. Drape is a noun used in both the UK and North America. It is NOT slang nor is it a shortened word.
I love the first PB choice, and if that color was part of my decor I'd e using those drapes myself. FYI. Drapes is a noun. That's why I always keep my dictionary handy. :)
ReplyDeleteThank you for making this clear. Just because something is in the dictionary these days doesn't make it correct. I fully expect "working on it" to show up any day as a synonym for eating. Common usage also doesn't make something correct. Draperies is the word favored by popular decorators thirty to fifty years ago. Using the word "drapes" is one of those "Non-U" practices. This is very similar to calling a man a gentleman, as in "There is a gentleman to see you." He is a man, time will tell if he is a gentleman. Our language is unfortunately becoming corrupt. Thank you Delores for maintaining a proper home and blogging about it.
ReplyDeleteI love both, but I am kinda out of my red stage so I am more more partial to the first pair. I think the color would just pop against the new cabs and especially if you go with the white walls as you had talked about. I can see this all in my mind and it is so Delores. :)

When I was in design school -- true, it was decades ago -- I was taught the proper word was curtain, not drapery and definitely not drapes. It is similar to the debate between sofa and couch. In the design world, sofa is preferred. In the end, we all say what sounds right to us.
ReplyDeleteAs for your curtains, I prefer the first one, but I don't believe I have seen your living room and I cannot judge which one would look better with your decor. I am sure either one will look lovely, especially with the customization you have planned for the header.

I felt the same way about the ready-made curtains, but I bought Pottery Barn curtains a few months ago, and I've been really pleased with the quality, especially for such a difference in price!

ReplyDeleteOh, funny.... we always called them "drapes", too. The dictionary says that it can be a noun. JC Penney sells curtains and drapes... so, I don't know about design school.... (I say mildly and in a friendly manner =]) but I think I'm free, free, free to call things what I want and hang what I want and not care what they say..... i just feel it and wanted to chirp it out loud. ;)

Speaking of design....
I love that room (more recent post) with all of the pictures on the wall!!! and it's just perfect timing. I have some bloggy friends who are vary, vary British and they hang their pictures in the same way - in a grid. I mentioned how British it was and how my sister and I have always admired that style - way of doing things - but have never tried it (I don't have enough to hang - heh, heh). They were surprised - they didn't realize it was a particularly British way of doing things - just came naturally. and, their wall is just stuffed with wonderful images that mean so much to them. Charming! =]
