Lilacs are considered the harbingers of spring, so with my one and only lilac bush in full bloom, I guess it's safe to say "spring has sprung!
Lilacs, according to Greek mythology began with the beautiful nymph Syrniga. Pan, the god of forests became captivated with her beauty and chased the frighted Syringa through the forest. She turned herself into a lilac bush to escape him! That's why Syringa is the botanical name for lilac.
According to the "Language of Flowers," purple lilacs symbolize the beginning of love.
White lilacs symbolize the innocence of youth.
All I know, is that I love lilacs!
I love to cut them and make arrangements for the dining room table.
I like to fill all my little jugs with lilacs and place them in every room, filling the house with their heavenly scent.
And they are my go-to flower for Easter and spring tablescapes.

Gorgeous photos D!! I love lilacs, but I don't have any. My Mom has some and she always puts them in a cranberry glass vase, they look amazing in that color of vase!

I am so jealous. We can't grow Lilacs here -- to hot. There isn't much more beautiful than the scent and look of a pure white Lilac.
ReplyDeleteYour lilacs are gorgeous! We planted 2 last year and I am checking on them daily. They are just now budding out. Our weather here in Tulsa has been so crazy. In the 70's one week and this week in the mid 30's. Our garden is so confused!!
ReplyDeleteOh, you lucky, lucky girl! Lilacs don't even TRY to show their little faces here in the Midwest until at least the 1st week in May...and then they don't last but a hot second. I would LOVE to have a few lilac bushes in our yard! Enjoy!!!

I love lilacs and go every year to an area nearby to gather baskets of them. They are so pretty inside or out on the patio in big containers.

Mine are blooming too and I love when I go out into the garden and a gently breeze blows the scent my way. Exquisite.

ReplyDeleteI have a Miss Kim lilac, about the only one that will bloom in our heat. It's just barely in bud right now..last year it was in full bloom the first week in April. Cray weather. Yours looks gorgeous and I'll bet smells heavenly.

ReplyDeleteI have a white one but it is dying off. I am okay with that because they were not very pretty, turning brown within a day or so of blooming and also sending up so many suckers through my garden.
Decided to post this for other readers: I had a friend who was very familiar with lilacs and they picked a ton of them for her mother's funeral.....her favorite flower. The secret I learned is that after cutting them, you must smash the end of the cut area with a hammer opening up the cut area so that they will take up the water.....worked like a dream. Hope this helps....hers lasted for several days and she told me that was the secret! They too are one of my favorite flowers, but we are inland in southern California where it is just too hot for them to grow.
