When we got the keys and were able to see the house without the staging furniture, it was a little daunting.
Everything looked tired, but I viewed it as a blank slate. Most of the rooms just needed a fresh coat of paint, like the living room above.
The sunroom off the living room was destined to be my favorite room.
The shutters are beautiful, but I think that window is even more beautiful!
What should I do, I wonder?
The dining room is large. Those doors need to go though and a new chandelier is in order.
What is that room off the dining room?
It's a dish room/bar/office.
I especially love the French doors in the dining room.
Not sure if they will ever open, but I plan on keeping them even though they're pretty rough.

So much space dedicated to the toilet. So little to the tiny shower.
What if we reversed that?
No hesitation there. This was priority number one, and exactly what we did.
Before we moved in, we gutted the bathroom and it's actually nearing completion.

ReplyDeleteWhat a great house, the people really took care of it even though the kitchen and bathroom need work, the floors are in beautiful shape, I love the windows and doors also. I know you will make it wonderful!! Nice size, not tiny but not huge either. So how many steps (houses) did you do before you "went home"?

I do have a question...so you had your house in the city that you sold and then you moved to this house or was there another one in between this new one and the city house? I can't remember!!Good luck with the renovations. I know it will be beautiful.

ReplyDeleteI do love that sunroom and I really envy your dishroom/office! It’s hard to find that kind of character in the mostly newer homes of the Phoenix suburbs. The shutters in the sunroom are nice but they seem to take up floor space when open. Framing out that gorgeous window with natural light filtering shades and curtain panels seems more your style. Can’t wait to see what you decide to do!

ReplyDeleteI think you are going to have so much fun fixing up this house! I love the windows, would get rid of all the shutters and louvered doors and use those French doors every day! I open mine and it doubles the size of the living room!

I love shutters and hate to see them go... Is privacy an issue? If not, I would agree with the others that you should remove them. Maybe use them elsewhere?

ReplyDeleteSo excited to read your post. We have the same house! We live in Los Altos and live in a 1924 cottage that was once an apricot ranch. In the late 70’s it went through some remodels and the kitchen/4th bedroom were combined into a beautiful kitchen/family room. I look forward to seeing what you do with it...it’s time for us to make some improvements and I think your project will inspire me! Let me know if you’d like to see pictures of your sister house in Los Altos.
I really can't tell you how excited I am to watch your renovations from the sidelines! I first found your blog many years ago when I googled "green velvet sofa" and even though I loved your sofa, I opted for a pink velvet slipcover. I think the sunroom is my favorite room, too, and can't wait to see the beautiful coziness you dress it in!

ReplyDeleteHi, Delores! When I saw the house you bought after you sold the house in the city I was perplexed. The house was very nice, but I didn’t sense the Delores vibe. This one has it. It’s hard to imagine how you’ll top the remodel of the city house, but I’ve learned to have faith in you. I cannot wait to see the changes in this one! Just be sure to plant your white roses!

I wouldn't get rid of the plantation shutters on the beautiful sunroom windows until you are actually moved in and living in the house for a while - there may be a good reason the previous owners had them. We bought a condo in Salt Lake City just over a year ago but weren't able to do renovations before we moved in. I am glad that was the case because some of the things we thought were necessary turned out not to be so, and because we lived in the space for a while we changed our minds about some aspects of the job and everything turned out way better than if we had not experienced the space before we made changes.
