The Moldovan kilim rug that we bought in Santa Fe finally arrived!
It's such a beautiful rug. All handmade, using vegetable dyes; at least 80 years old.
We bought it for the living room in Asti, thinking it would tie in nicely with the leather chairs.
Here is a close-up of the weave and colors.
I love it! I'm just not sure if it's too dark.
Here is the "before" photo of the living room with the hooked rug that I "borrowed" from BFF Maureen's attic! I like the lighter color, but also like the richness of the kilim.
Anyone have an opinion?

ReplyDeleteThe kilim is gorgeous, but I really prefer the lighter rug in the space. It is nice to have a change though, so maybe you can switch them out with your mood? :-)
ReplyDeleteI have been going in a lighter direction of late so maybe it's no surprise that I like the lighter rug. It may be that you took the photo of the light one a bit farther away and on a brighter day so the space looks bigger. It may be that the dark rug, though really pretty, just sucks up too much light. Another thing is you tend to lose your table on the dark one. For what it's worth.
ReplyDeleteIn MY opinion, you have a spring/summer look and a fall/winter look going here.
ReplyDeletePersonally, I'm not as into "white" as some are - but in the end, it is YOU who will live here :)
(I think your "new" old rug looks wonderful with the leather chairs.)

ReplyDeleteDelores,
ReplyDeleteWhile your kilim rug is gorgeous, I too prefer the lighter rug. I just feel it looks better with the dark cofee table. I just love your blog! I used to live in the Bay Area and so enjoy reading your blog and revisiting San Francisco and Wine Country, especcillly from the eyes of a decorator!
Love the rich colors of the rug. Maybe move the chairs to the opposite ends of the sofas. They look a little small and crowded between the sofas and the fireplace.
ReplyDeleteI love the kilim. It is gorgeous and I think it grounds the room beautifully. Beautiful. Hugs, marty
ReplyDeleteThe rug's stunning and hand made...I'm the hand made appreciator type! Maybe if you can, I'd love a brass, glass coffee table, so you can see the rug thru, plus it'll light up the entire area where the rug lays. I love it though, I don't mind dark, it's elegant. Thanks for sharing, Dolores. Hugs, FABBY
ReplyDeleteI love the kilim! It is gorgeous and goes with the leather chairs beautifully! You could use the lighter one in summer and the kilim in winter! XO, Pinky
ReplyDeleteI love them both but the kilim is so rich looking...so my vote is for it.
ReplyDeleteLiking them both, I agree with some of the others that maybe the new rug could be used in the fall/winter and the lighter one in the spring/summer.
ReplyDeleteI was going to say the same as Pinky, lighter in the Summer and darker in Fall and Winter. That is what is so beautiful about rugs, they can easily be moved and maybe even enjoyed in another room for a while. Your Kilim is beautiful and unusual in color and design.
ReplyDeleteLove your new rug, stunning! The colors are sooo rich and it gives such a beautiful vibe to your already stunningly beautiful room!
ReplyDeleteI like the "new" rug better. It's darker tones anchor the room and show off the lovely coffee table better.
ReplyDeleteForget the rug! (though it is beautiful), where did you get those wonderful leather chairs?

Gorgeous Rug! Love it with the leather chairs. I love the light look but this dark look is good too. I too think you've got a great spring/summer look and then nice warm fall/winter look.
ReplyDeleteAdore the kilim. Like the way it pulls the rich color of the leather chairs and adds a bit of drama.
ReplyDeleteI love the new rug, I think it is perfect for your fall/winter look. I like a lighter look for the hot summer months. I actually like bare floors for the summer. Your new rug looks as if it could tell a story and I love that!!! kathysue
ReplyDeleteWho cares if the kilim is dark? -- it is just too beautiful not to use. I think it is wonderful right where it is! Sally
ReplyDeleteLove the kilim, but not there - knowing you, you will find somewhere fabulous for it!
ReplyDeleteDefinitely a hard one to choose! I agree with everyone else change with the seasons!! Thanks for a lovely blog
ReplyDeleteI think he kilim is gorgeous, but think it would look better with a lighter table. The dark table is perfect with the lighter rug.
ReplyDeleteBarbara
Delores, I love the rug and it is perfect with the leather chairs.
ReplyDeletexo,
Sherry
I love the darker rug-but that is just me. I do have mostly light colors myself but that rug just seems to "settle" your room. The colors are gorgeous and it is hard to believe it is so old and not too worn or faded. Perfect! xo Diana
ReplyDeleteThe entire look and feel of your room is lovely ... I also prefer the lighter area rug. Especially in Spring/Summer. Aren't you lucky to be able to switch them out ..........
ReplyDeleteThe Kilim is spot on!! It's warmth goes beautifully with the chairs and it gives the room a bit of coziness without being overwhelming. Definitely not too dark.
ReplyDeleteGood choice.
This is a tough choice. They are both gorgeous but really do create very different looks. I think whatever your gut tells you, will be the right choice for you. x Sharon
ReplyDeleteI think it's fantastic, but you could always switch them out seasonally!?
ReplyDeleteI'm surprised at how many prefer the lighter. I LOVE your style but don't share your love of the kilims and yet this one was an exception for me! I truly love it and I think that the dark really anchors the room.
ReplyDelete"Hi Delores",
ReplyDeleteI love everything here BUT I think there is too much of a dark stripe down the middle... I'm thinking MAYBE to lighten up your coffee table? Either change it out OR put a runner down the middle and let it hang over on both sides with the color of your couches in it... LOVE your new rug...
Any way it's a gorgeous setting...
Have a great day,
Donna
LOVE the darker rug! And have to ask where did you find those wonderful leather chairs? Beautiful as always. You inspire.
ReplyDeleteLove the new rug, I'd use it September to March and the lighter one April to August. Both looks are lovely but seasonal, in my humble opinion.
ReplyDeleteKaren
The Santa Fe rug is nice but too dark, it seems. The lighter one looks better I think. Beautiful room though!
ReplyDeleteBoth of course! lighter one in spring &summer and darler for fall & winter.
ReplyDeleteI love the coloring in the new rug from Santa Fe- The rich earthy tones in the rug pull on the coloring of the leather chairs and with the wood tone of the table they are all harmonious together. I love the rustic feeling it gives the room. The light rug works well enough- but only in the sense that it grabs onto the sofa coloring, it's not creating the same rustic charm. I would like to see one more picture backed out the same way as the picture shown with the lighter rug to make the comparison more equaled.
ReplyDeleteBoth rugs are beautiful but I LOVE the new one! Just seems to pop in the room...of course, I love color too! I can't live with light, pale things.
ReplyDeleteWhat feels best to you?
Pat
I love both rugs. Why not use the darker one in the fall and winter and the lighter one in the spring and summer! That's what I would do!
ReplyDeleteWOW...Oh my goodness, I would die for that new (80 year 0ld) rug. It is another beautiful item in your room, and it fits perfectly. I would be so proud own one. Lovely..lovely, and very rich and classy.
ReplyDeleteDelores, your new rug is perfect for this space, especially for the fall and winter. You might think about using the lighter one for spring and summer. We take up our large rug in our living room for the spring and summer and just have the bare wood floors.
ReplyDeleteHey, girl! I love your new rug, but actually like your BFF Maureen's lighter rug better in this space. The new rug makes the room look dark and heavy. Not sure exactly what part of the country you live in, but if your winters are cold you might get away with using the new rug to help cozy up the room during those months. Your leather chairs look great!
ReplyDeleteI love your new rug...maybe you could switch between the two for a seasonal look? The dark one in the fall in winter and the lighter in the spring/summer.
ReplyDeleteI love the dark. Warm and cosy winter or summer.
ReplyDeleteLet me preface by saying that if you put a room together, I would be in heaven. Although I like either rug, I prefer the Kilim. I think it ties the chairs and heavier pieces together. I am really a fan of handmade, ageless, timeworn. But either is perfect...
ReplyDeleteToo dark? NO! RICH, giving depth to your space and ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC? YES!!!
ReplyDeleteWell Done!
Could you tell us the brand and pattern of your carpet...is it real seagrass or a look-alike...wall-to-wall??? Thanks.
ReplyDeleteI hold you, your blog and your talent in high esteem.
ReplyDeleteIn my humble, opinion.
Each of the rugs have wonderful attributes.
I concur with changing seasonally.
When using the gorgeous Kilim rug
if it were me, I would change the three lamp shades and change the sofa deck cushions coverings. As, I feel the that changing the deck cushions covering would add a dimension of aged texture that is lacking in respect to the sofas in the photos with the kilim rug. I would also change two throw pillows on each sofa.
I would pull out and use the muted rusty orange color highlighted on the right hand side of photos two and three.
I would change out the green glass vase. Perhaps, using a piece of your fabulous majolica in its place?
Your coffee table is quite fabulous.
Kindly,
CJF
I don't know if you read all these comments, but would you mind telling where you got the rug in Santa Fe? Was it The Rugman? Thanks from Albuquerque
ReplyDeleteWhat brand of chairs are those?
