Once a year the Cecile Brunner roses growing on the fence are a riot of blooms.
They looked extra glorious with the sun highlighting them this morning.
I wish they bloomed longer, but alas, they bloom only once. Although a feeble attempt later produces a fraction of the blooms that April enjoys.
I wonder why these roses don't perform like other climbers?
Does anyone know the answer?

Your garden is very lovely - what wonderful rose bushes. I always add some tea leaves to the rose bushes once a season because they like soil to be just a little acid. Perhaps a special rose feed will invigorate them!

The climbing variety of Cecile Brunner is a one-time bloomer. There is a spray variety that is a vigorous repeat bloomer.
ReplyDeleteI have one at the edge of my driveway that is around 6' tall even though I cut it down to 2' every spring and prune heavily throughout the bloom season. It's wonderful!

ReplyDeleteI don't know why they only bloom once per year. I have some too and they are so pretty while they are blooming and I am always sad to see the last bloom die.

These old roses bloom only once Delores - breeders have created the repeat-flowering roses, florabundas with tea rose shapes and lately (especially from David Austin), scented, old-fashioned looking roses with multiple blossoms and repeat flowering. My hero!

ReplyDeleteYour roses are stunning!!!...there was a home in our area that was always featured in garden magazines...She had five acres of beautifully landscaped gardens...mainly roses..she used mainly the David Austin roses...

ReplyDeleteI have a Cecile Brunner and I get it to bloom a bit more by cutting some of the branches back after the first bloom. It sends out a fair amount of new blooms after that. I love spring when it rains Cecile Brunner petals.
I have a Lace Cascade climber, a direct cousin of Iceberg, that blooms non-stop March to October in Southern California (where we live).

Aren't they beautiful? I know, it is so sad when such beautiful plants blooms such a short amount of time. Like with the azaleas and the peonies I really do soak in all their glory because I know they are just visiting for a while. I think when they are such short bloomers we enjoy them so much more and never take them for granted!!

ReplyDeleteMagnificent rose fence you got there! Are they scented as well? No roses in bloom yet here in Bergen, Norway - season for bulbs and magnolia yet, so have to wait for the "big show" starting late may or so..! Roses are my favorite in the garden, so my heart ache for it to start. Thanks for sharing your garden with me.
