Road Trip To Big Sur

How have I lived in California for 31 years and never been to Big Sur?
That is what I asked myself as we headed down Highway 1 on a crystal clear day in February.

I don't recall seeing the Pacific Ocean so blue before.

We stopped at every wide spot in the road to admire the view and try to capture it with our cameras and iPhones.

The cliffs, green pastures and gorgeous blue ocean made me think of Ireland, or how I imagine it to be.

Our destination:  The legendary Ventana Inn and Spa, nestled in the redwoods, overlooking the ocean in Big Sur.
More to follow.....

  3. Oh How I needed this....on a cold and snowy day here in SW Missouri. We have had back to back Winter storms here in the last week. First ice, then snow.....so THIS is a breath of fresh air. I can smell the ocean breeze from here. Keep it coming!!!

  4. I love Big Sur! My daughter occasionally is stationed in Monterey at the Defense Langiage Institute (she's Air Force), so I try to visit her as often as I can there! I love to drive down the coast, stopping to take hundreds of pictures. One of my favorite places in Big Sur is the Spirit Garden, next to the Big Sur Restaurant. While the restaurant is pricey, the garden is home to the famous Spirit Houses and is a real treat. There are often wonderful performances there on weekends.
    Enjoy your trip!

  7. We visited Big Sur while driving from San Francisco to San Luis Obispo back in '04. That drive is one of the most scenic in the country. We were completely awestruck by its beauty at every turn. Enjoy your trip.

  12. I loved Big Sur. We had lunch at Nepenthe -- al fresco dining at picnic tables high on a cliff 808 feet above the ocean. On a clear day, it is breathtaking. We were there in 1984. I wonder if it still exists?
Take more pictures please; I am loving them.
