Where's The Bathtub?

I love a long soak in a tub at the end of the day.
Just add bath salts, a candle, soft music and a glass of wine and I'm so happy!
So it was quite a disappointment when I had to give up the tub in the master bathroom.
No matter how we tried, it just wasn't going to fit.
The space that the tub would have gone, but wasn't quite big enough will now house a linen armoire instead.

The armoire makes me happy because I'm already filling it with white fluffy towels, baskets and apothecary jars in my mind.
It just doesn't make me as happy as a tub would!

 That's ok.
I've always loved the idea of furniture in bathrooms anyway, so now I'll have fun creating a whole new look.

The armoire will now replace the built in cabinet that the architect included for bath storage.
This is much better and original.

Hopefully I won't miss the tub too much.
And hopefully I won't hear the question, "Where's the bathtub?'

So this poses a whole new dilemma.
Should I put a shower-over-tub in one of the guest baths, even though I was planning on a walk in tiled shower?
Just not sure if it even matters anymore!
What do you think of a home without a bathtub?

Delores, we faced the same dilemma when we remodeled this house twenty years ago. The master bath has a walk in shower, but no tub. The shower is wonderful with multiple shower heads, but to be honest I miss a large soaking tub. Our guest baths have tubs, but neither are the big deep tubs that I dream about. So.......after twenty years we are now considering remodeling one of the guest baths. Our plan is to enlarge it just a bit and put in one of the standing tubs that are deep. If all goes as planned, I want to use a piece of furniture rather than builtin cabinets. Love the look! Thanks for the inspiration photos.
Guess, my opinion doesn't help much other than to say, I empathize with you about a no tub master. ;-)

My condolences on no tub -- I know exactly what you mean by that end-of-the-day soak! I was going to say that a tub in a guest bath would not be of benefit to you, and I still believe that. I can't imagine myself using a tub outside of the master bath. However, a tub could come in handy for another person -- an elderly relative who might visit or you might care for, a grandchild, or a bonus for resale purposes.

I personally could not live without a soaker tub and having to trek off to a guest bath with a tub/shower combo just wouldn't cut it. I'm even knocking out a master walkin closet in our new Florida condo to accommodate a soaker. Who needs that many clothes? A good deep bubble bath and a glass of wine have saved my sanity countless times.

I am sorry to hear about the tub dilemma! However, I do like these gorgeous armoire/cabinet examples. I would love to have something like this in our master bathroom.

I personally wouldn't miss a tub (since my kids are grown) but I'm the exception among my friends. I think you've got to have at least one tub in your house, for kids.

We had this exact same problem when we moved to our latest home. No shower in the master but the guest bath has a tub/shower combo. When the kids and granddaughters (who live away so when they visit it's usually for a couple of days or so) are there, the little girls really love bathing and playing in the tub. For a few years they were still too little for showers so the tub was really necessary. I think a tub is a must in at least one bathroom of a home. That's just my take. I am so excited to see pictures of the new place! Thanks for sharing!

I have to have a tub - a bubbly soak at the end of a long day or a Sunday morning lazy soak are one of life's great pleasures.

We are remodelling both our bathrooms & both have a large bath & a shower too ….. even a little slipper bath would be better than no bath.

however, I love your cupboard - it is stunning ….

I have to say that I would truly miss my big tub ! There is nothing better than a hot, scented bath and a glass of cold Chardonnay ! I do enjoy my master bath soaker tub, but I'd be just as happy in my guest bath - it is all yours after all !

I would not miss a tub. I had a super fancy jet tub in a condo I lived in and I only used it *once* for the four years I lived there.

I'm sorry about your tub, but the armoire will be gorgeous! I'm pretty jealous of that! As far as having a tub in one of the secondary bathrooms goes, I'd say it only matters if you are worried about resale value. Otherwise, just do what makes you happy! Can't wait to see it all come together! Thanks for sharing!

I used to think anything that couldn't be cured by a long hot soak, a cool glass of wine and a little opera in the background had to be a terminal illness. However, we live in an older house that didn't have big bathrooms. I choose not to annex other rooms for a bath and when i remodeled my bath, I took out the tub and put in a walk in shower with multiple shower heads. I am short and getting shorter it seems. I miss my tub, but I love the ease of getting in and out of the shower.

I think your answer is in your first paragraph. Your description of a tub and how it makes you feel and then you saying your armoire, does NOT make up for a tub. Get your tub!
♥♥♥ the armoire and white fluffy towels all stacked so nicely, my favorite look!

I would not buy the home if there was no bath tub, or enough room to put one in.

As long as you don't plan on selling. Cause it won't. Been there done that.

I think not having at least one tub might cause some problems, if you decide at some point to sell. A neighbour put his house on the market and it wasn't selling. It was in a desirable area and was a big house.I wondered why until the realtor told me there was no tub. Her clients either liked to soak in a tub or had children and needed a tub.

Delores, We looked at a lot of new homes before buying this one six months ago. I can tell you a large walk in shower has replaced the big soaking tub. We have thiis in our home and love the large shower. Just add a nice tub in the guest room.
Hugs,
Sherry

A walk-in shower with a movable seat will compensate for no tub. Turning your back to the shower-fall and allowing the warm water to wash over and massage your shoulders and upper back...

You need to adjust your mindset. I'm not washing-up; I'm immersed in a waterfall.

This very elegant home without a lovely soaking tub...no! There is nothing that replaces the comfort and delight of a long bath with all of the accouterments. I hope you can squeeze one in somewhere.

Hi- Just put in a tub somewhere, and if it is a place you can visit where there is no company, by all means, take a bath....

My preference is a tub - but it has to be a stand-a-one tub - I hate those tub shower combos. Last time I moved, the master bath shrank by 2/3's and all I have now in both full baths is the combo. I loath them - I feel so pinned in by either the curtain hanging on the side of one or the glass doors on the other... Plus they are too dark to read in, lol. So I end up NEVER using the tub, and showering anyway. So I say if it's a choice between a combo and a really nice shower, go with the shower!

I have the opposite problem in my house. The only shower (think painted cinderblock walls) is in the basement utility room, while the main bath is a tub only. I love a good soak as much as the next woman, but there are times when I'm running late or just want a quick shower and don't want to go to the basement. Apparently in my area when these houses were built in the '50's, showers were not popular in the main bathrooms and were all put in the basements. I have a lovely arched ceiling over my tub and although I like the interest it adds to a long narrow space, it will have to be torn out so the showerhead will be high enough. Just put the tub in another bathroom and consider it your own personal retreat :)

We have a large walkin shower in upstairs bathroom, and a bathtub with hand held shower downstairs. We have used the bathtub once in 5 years. Conclusion?

We are building and have opted to leave out the free standing tub in favor of furniture- a small hutch for towels and a chair. However, the plumbing is in place if we, or future owners, would like to add a tub someday. I will add that the two secondary bathrooms both have tub/shower combos. One tub in the house is necessary, I think.

If you really love to soak in a tub....put one somewhere because it's your home, you live there.....guests only come once in a while. I'd rather have to soak in the guest room bath than miss having that option at all! Put one in the guest room...besides, if you have guests with small children, they might appreciate having a tub to bathe them in.

You need a tub somewhere for resale. Imaging trying to bathe kids in a shower. Yes find a place in one of the other bathrooms. Our master has a big walk in shower but I do have a tub with overhead shower in the guest bath.

my daughter and hubby bought a house with two bathrooms with walk in showers, no tub. They are in the process of redoing the master bath to add a bathtub. When our two daughters and families visited us last Thanksgiving, the grandkids loved our large soaking tub in the master and the cousins never wanted to get out. If your future has grandkids in it, I highly recommend a tub if nothing but to hear the joy of their laughter.

It sounds to me as though you need a tub! You all will think I am crazy; but I love a tub in the bedroom! Free-standing of course!

I even have a whole bunch of pictures of them in my Pinterest account with it's own board! "Bathtubs in bedrooms"!

I am completely dependent on my soaking tub!!!
