Our Little Kitchen Potager

Just outside the kitchen door in Asti, is our raised bed kitchen garden, or potager as they call it in France.
Every year we plant tomatoes, zucchini, Armenian cucumbers and herbs.
This year we started with all new soil and it really paid off because our little potager is performing like crazy!

Mr. A loves tending the garden and experimenting with different plants.
This year, we focused mainly on heirloom tomatoes, carefully choosing a variety of different colors for our favorite summer salad, Insalata Caprese.

I found bamboo teepees online through Gemplers to help them grow straight.
These are great and would also work well for peas, cucumbers and beans.

I love looking out the kitchen door and seeing our little raised bed potager.
I have a feeling it's going to be a bumper crop this year!
What have you planted and how does your garden grow?

Love the bamboo teepees, they add so much interest to the veggie beds. What heirloom varieties are you growing?

I've planted bell peppers, squash, zuccini, cucumbers. I love seeing it grow! The best part is picking, and eating! I also grow lemon, lime, orange, and plum trees.

I live next to a greenbelt area full of trees and my yard has become too shady in most spots due to the growth of those trees.
I can grow in the front yard amongst the flowers though and have parsley and usually some cherry tomatoes.
I have never had much luck with the heirloom varieties though. Too bad because they are far superior tasting to anything else.

I'm so envious of your beautiful garden spot. This spring we moved to a different home in a wooded area and I have no place at all that has enough sun to plant anything! I've put one single tomato plant in a pot on the deck and move it around to find a sliver of sun but I'm afraid it's not going to produce. I love the little bamboo teepees. Your garden reminds me of Meryl Streep's garden in It's Complicated!

Your garden looks great. We only planted tomatoes, cucumbers and strawberries this year and the tomatoes were doing well, but we have had way too much rain and now they are not happy.

Oh how nice!

I have herbs in my front flower beds.
Anyone need oregano? (I know people are tired of me asking.....)

I hadn't spent much time doing anything in the back, but next year I'm thinking cucumbers, radishes, cabbage and salad greens.

I'd love to raise geese too, to help keep the grasshoppers down....

Hi D! That looks amazing!! I love heirlooms we get them locally at the farmstands here. No garden for Kathysue, but my Mom plants tomatoes every year, she loves a good home grown tomato!

Very nice potager! This is my fourth or fifth year trying to grow a garden. Put in new raised bed planters in front this year and now the oak tree is so big there isn't enough sun. So just a few mini-tomatoes - like a handful LOL. I do have a few patty pan squash plants in the back yard planter that are finally going crazy. But that's about it for this year - oh except for my herb garden which always seems to grow well.

Your potager looks wonderful. We bought this house last Nov and had to wait until all the leaves on the trees came out this spring to see where best to put our raised beds. It would have been to late to plant at that point, so I have three containers planted with a tomato plant, herbs and lettuce. We will build our potager this summer and plant a fall crop in August.

My garden is looking sad this year...two lonely tomato plants and some leftover mint, oregano and snapdragons from last year. But in my defense we have to contend with a 6 month old puppy who believes every green stalk needs her personal pruning "chomp". But a new 4' ft wire fence protects the garden. Next step is some basil. I bring my extras to our church and it gets snatched up quick!

I just want to live where you live! I truly need to photograph our garden for you! Our beans are like Jack and the Beanstalk! Our squash is somewhat ok…tomatoes somewhat ok…okra is terrible as are our blueberry bushes! I love these trellis' and I'm going to that website! Your garden is amazing!

The potagers look great and I love the idea of the bamboo teepees. May I ask what height you ordered for your potagers? I'm planning to order some for my garden as well.

Hi Teresa,
I believe we ordered the 48 inch high teepees. Not sure though. They're pretty high--high enough to hold a tomato plant. ~Delores
