Iceberg Roses Galore

White Iceberg Roses are the most popular white rose ever, and in my opinion, the most perfect rose!

The standard tree version is one of my favorites. I have them planted along the sunroom window and when the window is open, the aroma is wonderful.

The uniformity of all-white roses is very pleasing to my eye. The boxwood hedge keeps them framed and orderly.

Iceberg roses are a lovely companion to the fountain too.

More standard tree roses in front of the window box, newly planted with boxwood.
Cecile Brunner climbing roses are a riot on the garage arbor.

Someone wants to get out and smell the roses!

What makes the Iceberg rose so perfect?
They are prolific bloomers, blooming all summer long. They are also disease resistant, quite hardy and have a soft, sweet fragrance.

In Asti, my Iceberg roses have been left to their own devices, unattended and unpruned, proving just how hardy they are.

They will grow up to 5 feet, forming a hedge if allowed.

Although they aren't the best for cutting bouquets, I do it anyway. Just having them last for one night by my bedside is a special treat!

Lilac Time

"I am thinking of the lilac trees,

That shook their purple plumes,

And when the sash was open,

Shed fragrance through the room."

French Farmhouse Tea Towels

I received my French Farmhouse Tea Towels from Maria at The Growers Daughter a few days ago. She has an online Etsy boutique, and I just couldn't resist these great towels.

Three towels with three different sentiments, each with a red stripe.
Totally adorable!

I have such a weakness for kitchen towels! Talk about an inexpensive pick me up.
These three towels were only $15!

Here are three more towels, recently purchased at the de Young Museum gift store, of all places!

I washed this one. It actually made it better! What does Essuie de Vaisselle mean?
Well according to the Google translator, it means dish towel! Imagine that?

Summer Dreaming on Such a Winter's Day

"I prefer winter and fall, when you feel the bone structure of the landscape - the loneliness of it, the dead feeling of winter. Something waits beneath it, the whole story doesn't show."
~Andrew Wyeth

Last week, I got up very early in the morning when we were in Asti.
It was so cold, there was even frost on the chaises. Yes, there is beauty in this winter landscape, but I'm missing the warm months already!

Ahhh, remembering last summer....

We drove to the Russian River at the Summer Bridge later in the day to check out the river levels. It's a fisherman's "thing" to do. The river is a raging torrent!
In fact the Summer Bridge is gone.

The river last summer...

Back at the house, I noticed the Mulberry Tree has lost all it's leaves and got it's annual haircut.
Oh, how I miss those beautiful green leaves!

It's hard to believe they will grow back like last summer.

The grapevines have all been cut back, everything is bare.

They too will grow back and look just like this.
Dreaming of summer...

Cold and gray, dead or dormant, the garden is asleep.

Dreaming of summer...

It's like everything is hibernating, waiting to come alive again.

Dreaming of summer....

I'm learning to appreciate the beauty of winter, but it's hard!
Mr. A prefers winter because he is a winter steelhead fisherman.
Me? Not so much! But I'm trying!
