A Kitchen Tour

I've been meaning to share my new kitchen with y'all for a long time, but just haven't gotten around to it.
You've probably seen it in the distance, lurking in the shadows...

So today, I cleaned off the counters, bought some flowers and staged the kitchen for a photoshoot and reveal.

But, let's back up for a little before and after action.
The kitchen during the tiling phase.
I chose white subway tile for the backsplash and took it all the way to the ceiling.

After the tile was installed, the cabinets were painted onsite.

I chose classic soapstone counters which have held up very well.
They were oiled a year ago, and still look great.

My white porcelain collection looks even better in this black and white kitchen.

In fact, I have found that everything looks good in a black and white kitchen--even plaid or transferware.

The few pieces of my beloved majolica are right at home too.

Notice the pot filler over the stove?
I was totally against it, but my contractor insisted that I would love it.
Yea, he was right!

But my favorite part of the kitchen is the refrigerator!
I loved the glass fronted refrigerator in our old house, but couldn't manage to take it with us.
This one is smaller though and perfect for the space.

We live in this room!
Having two club chairs in the kitchen definitely helps keep us cozy.
We have our morning coffee here every day.

Oscar has his little bed right along side!
Just outside the window is the atrium that leads to the roof deck.

I was lucky to be able to squeeze in a small breakfast table.
It's also where we eat our dinner!

Drapes in a John Robshaw fabric keep the kitchen cozy too.

We inherited the Persian rugs from Mrs. A.
I love how they warm up the space.

A close up of the sink area.
Since we are in the City, the view isn't so great.
I solved that problem with woven shades and planted rosemary topiaries outside the window.

The drawer and cupboard to the left of the sink is actually the dishwasher.
The other side of the sink houses the garbage in the large pull-out drawer.

Our new kitchen has been such a joy and I can honestly say, if we ever move, I will just have to recreate it all over again in the next house!
After all, how can you go wrong with black and white?

I love your kitchen! Looks beautiful and gets great light! I can completely understand why you use those club chairs so much. Well done.

A question about the soapstone: What oil was used on the counters? I have soapstone (mine have been in 18 months) and I need to oil them every 4-6 months. I use an oil recommended by For The Love of a House by Real Milk Paint. After a while, I find it sort of wears off and then I need to oil them again. Yours look amazing for having been done a year ago.

Congrats again on the new house!

Bravo! Your kitchen is a masterpiece! Having just finished my own black and white kitchen I wish I’d thought of the book shelves in the side of the island. Ah well, next kitchen . . .

Thanks for sharing - it’s magnificent!

I used mineral oil. I read about Joan's product too but decided to use plain old mineral oil. I could probably oil them again soon.

Hi Delores, once again you've hit it out of the park. (I live in nearby Livermore so maybe I will catch the ball!) 😄

Delores, a black and white kitchen would be a dream for me. Love the idea!
We also have a sitting area off our kitchen, and it is a favorite spot. No table and chairs, just our two wing back chairs and a counter for eating. One of my favorite spots!
Thanks for sharing this beautiful space. Love all the white ceramics with black graphics. I need to add some to our kitchen!

I love your kitchen. We are in the process of building a new house and I am having white shaker cabinets. Still trying to decide on white subway tile or white washed brick for the back splash.

Your kitchen is amazing. Warm. Inviting. I love the lanterns over the island. The light over the dining table. The lovely light coming in over the sink. Gorgeous. I inherited a cream and black kitchen, wtih warm wood floors, so I know how you feel. it's a winner combination.

Delores, your kitchen has a marvelous timeless quality to it. I love it! It's so cozy, but so state-of-the-art at the same time! That majolica platter looks wonderful against the wall. Love all the splashes of color as well as the white. I'm glad you were able to squeeze in an eating area. I know I couldn't live without mine. I also love the simplicity and elegance of the cabinets. Everything is just beautiful!

What a gorgeous kitchen! I inherited ours when we bought the house and have plans to renovate at some stage in the future - am sure when I do you'll see touches of your in mine.

I do know what you mean about recreating a room you love. Our last three bathroom remodels in our last three homes have been identical. I loved the first one so much I just recreated it again! Imagine my surprise when I walked in to our current home and the bathroom was already the style we'd been doing. The realtor couldn't work out why my husband was rolling around laughing! :-)
