Our "New" Kitchen!

"Find things you love and build around them.
Designers will be the first to tell you that they'd rather not start from scratch. Their best work is a combination of what you love and what they know." ~Karol Dewulf Nickell

That quote has been my mantra during this entire kitchen remodel.   It all started when I replaced the countertops last October.  Everything else was built around that!

Here are a few shots of the final result.

It's so nice having the kitchen put back together and I love how the cabinets turned out.
They have a lovely brown glaze over them and are distressed just enough.

Because this kitchen has been one thing leads to another, I've been calling it the "can of worms" remodel.
Replacing one thing, led to replacing another, which made me paint...you get the picture, right?
Remember my mantra?

Painting the cabinets green is making me question the wall color.  See, it's the can of worms effect!

I'm actually thinking of white walls!  That's right, you heard me!
When I say white, I mean a soft white.  The cabinets will just pop, don't you think?

Painting the cabinets also makes me question my accessories and whether they should find another place to live, like this naive little fruit painting that has always leaned against the backsplash, hiding the electric outlet...

Last night I poured myself a glass of wine and just started playing with my stuff, moving things around and enjoying our "new" kitchen!
I moved the topiaries off the mantel and flanked the sink with them.
Brought in some more confit pots and demijohns.

The brown transferware lamp is the one constant that stays.  It gives off a warm glow in the corner.  I'm loving our kitchen at night!

I'm also loving the new refrigerator!
It is so fun at night with the light on inside.
I haven't given it a second thought what the contents look like inside.
People told me that it would drive me crazy if things weren't neat and staged, but it hasn't.

Some even said my kitchen would look like a 7 Eleven!
What I do know is that this is the most efficient refrigerator ever.
It's a dream come true for me and I'm so grateful to have her in my kitchen!

Ian, the master painter said it best:  "This kitchen now looks like it belongs in this house, like it evolved over time."  That was my intent all along.  It certainly has evolved and fits the age of the house perfectly.
We are just thrilled with the new look!

I love the new cabinet color! I also think the little painting is the perfect match! The minute I saw it I also thought that maybe the wall color would be going and a soft white would be the perfect choice. Beautiful kitchen, great job!

Oh Delores, I knew it was going to be gorgeous...what do you do that isn't???, but this is just over the top stunning! I love every bit of it! What a fantastic job! I bet you are so enjoying this. I LOVE the green! In fact, I think I've got a green kitchen pinned that I saw on your blog at one point but it's maybe more green than I'd go. I just love it all...love that you kept the island black. And...is that a pantry in the third photo? The double doors have little slats at top it looks like. I LOVE that...would love to see a close up of those!

So happy for you!

Nancy

p/s my Brother in law and sister n law will be in your area at the end of the month for some sort of wine tour/private showing. I wondered if you would be going! I bragged to them about your gorgeous home and that I 'knew' you from back in my ebay days before either of us were bloggers! lol

Love the green cabinets and I agree the walls should be white. I like the fridge too but I don't think I would be brave enough to put all my stuff on display.

Oh my goodness - I am in LOVE with your kitchen!! It's beyond fabulous! The cabinet colour is perfect, and I just adore the fridge too - it's so big - we only seem to have small ones here in England! I could go on and keep gushing, but I'm going to hold back now - is it only women who go go faint at the mere sight of a good kitchen?
I'm now going to have a good browse through the rest of your wonderful blog, but suffice to say that I LOVE your style and am delighted to have found you.

Delores,
I fell in love with Kathysue's green cabinets years ago and painted mine green as well. I loved them. But you are right, painting does open a can of worms. But, its a good can. :) I LOVE your kitchen. As usual, it is a showpiece. I love the fridge, and although I am far from OCD, my kitchen stays a wreck. I could never have the glass front. But there is something about seeing a carton of eggs and a gallon of milk. I don't know why, but I just love that look. I know you are so happy to have things back together. You did GOOD!

Barb @ The Everyday Home said...

Oops forgot to say - I second the white. A creamy white. In some ways, I think the yellow (where it didn't before) takes away from the green cabs. It competes is that makes any sense. I know whatever you do it will be spectacular!

Hi D!!! I am grinning as I type this. You know exactly how thrilled I am for YOU!!! It is amazing!! The cabinets are beautiful and he did a great job. I think all the things we talked about the other day will be one more perfect touch to an already gorgeous kitchen. So glad you shared your hard work and talent!! xo Kathysue

I love the softness of your existing walls, but it is hard to tell from a photo. You can tell what the colour looks like throughout the day and that's what is going to sway your decision!

deb said...

I agree with you about the white - I think it would look great!

Kim @ Savvy Southern Style said...

Love the green. It just confirms that that is what I want instead of my black island. It is in poor shape. Wow, you have opened a can of worms. I think the walls look fine, but I know it will bug you if you don't change them.

Robin said...

This is such a beautiful, classic kitchen. I think the present paint color looks fine but a creamy white would compliment the cabinets that much more. I miss a sink over my window. Mine just looks out in the great room and it looks dumb if I put anything around it. Thanks for sharing and I'm sure you are enjoying it.

Hi Delores, My kitchen cabinets are the same color as yours...have had them that color for almost 20 years. My walls are dry wall compound with natural straw pieces worked into them...in other words white. I love them them still and so does every visitor. I think that you will like white walls with your green cabinets.

Oh, my goodness! Delores, your kitchen is so beautiful! What a gorgeous place! I love your cabinets with the leaded glass in the doors. The color is so pretty and I agree that a soft white would really look wonderful with your cabinets. Now look at your stove and that hood! Oh, my Lord, I'd be in heaven. Your fridge is amazing! Now don't cook anything, you don't want to mess it up! ;) You are truly blessed.
Be a sweetie,
Shelia ;)

I cannot believe how much I love the color green on your cabinets. Wow. My pinterest "kitchens I love" board is filled with white kitchens but yours, I truly find warm and beautiful. Love the fridge and the island the best. Oh, and floors too. (that cover everything? haha) But I do think creamy white walls would be nice, but you have to be prepared because I had your wall color and when I went creamy white it looked SO white... Now I love it.

Delores,
I love your green cabinetry!!! What I truly was impressed with most was when you said ...you "love playing with your stuff"! Sounds as if this is the best compliment you can give a re~model! Now it's beginning to feel like the home you intended! Great choices!
Fondly,
Pat
P.S. I'm smitten with the pear print hanging on the side of the cabinet!

Looks beautiful! One of the things I love about it is it almost feels like its been there a long long time, a total compliment. Love the black island, the color, the materials used right down to your glass faced refrigerator. Well done!

You should be thrilled...it is perfect! I think the soft white paint will be beautiful just keep the whites of the marble in mind. Whites are funny, they can look dirty so easy when the tint is not perfect. As an artist I can tell you, white is THE hardest color to select. Good luck and enjoy!

Beautiful Delores!! What a lovely thing for Ian to say. I, too, was thinking white walls;) I think it would be so pretty with the marble. I LOVE the refrigerator and like to think of it as "live art"!! I would like to see the 7/11 (so rude) that has a 20+k refrigerator!! Enjoy your beautiful new space....
Bon Appetit!!

Delores, your kitchen is absolutely stunning. There will be a lot of pinning here I'll bet. I can't even pick a favorite element, but you have achieved a timeless look that's for sure.
Around here we call your decorating effect "If you give a mouse a cookie" instead of opening a can of worms. LOL If you are familiar with the story it goes something like: if you give a mouse a cookie, he's going to want a glass a milk, and if you give him milk, then a straw. and so on and on. Either way, what you've done is gorgeous.

Love the cabinet color and I agree, a warm white would be awesome with the newly painted, gorgeous cabinets.
My husband runs when I say let's paint.. one time the let's paint was:
new rug, new headboard, new sewing machine, new wallpaper in bathroom, new paint in bathroom, new lamps, new curtains, until he just croaked and said no mas..no mas.. So I really understand the one thing leads to another..

Regardless, your home is most lovely!

The kitchen is absolutely luscious, Delores. The color, the fabulous fridge (What 7-eleven does that reader shop in???), the counters and now all the beautiful treasures you are layering on, are just perfect. A warm white on the walls will be the icing on the cake.
All the best...Victoria

I am changing to marble countertops and my supplier said he would throw in a stainless undermount sink. I have a huge deep porcelain one that I love. He said it wouldn't work. Can you source me the sink you have? Your kitchen is just yummy !!!!

Delores - My gosh, your kitchen and collections are divine!! I want those white ironstone pieces: butter, lard, etc....let's trade :-) Beautiful pottery!! I think it looks wonderful the way it is, but a soft white would be fabulous with the white pieces. Thanks for sharing your kitchen with us.

I would love the walls creamy white. I think your hunches are always right on!

Thanks so much for sharing your beautiful kitchen. A very lovely can of worms it is!!!

W.O.W. You've certainly helped me make up my mind on my own kitchen! I have a large open hutch the same color of green and I've threatened to repaint all the cabinets to match - at least on the bottom. They are currently white and living in the country, it's very difficult to keep them clean. And now, all the wiping is taking off the paint. The green cabinets look great - and I love the wall color (which is what I already have on my walls!). Originally, I had wanted that same refrigerator, but when building the house, as the budget got a bit tight, I opted for another instead. Personally, I think you made a great choice! Enjoy your new space!

Fantastic job Delores! I love everything in this kitchen. The cabinet color and finish is perfect. I love the marble counter tops, sink, back splash, light fixtures and island. What most impress me is that the overall look is contiguous to the rest of the home which I consider to be an excellent design execution. Bravo!

I actually would NOT recommend changing your wall color, haha! There’s a great yellow and green color scheme going on in the kitchen right now, which is actually rather attractive. That painting of the fruits is going to go great with the yellowish wall paint. Another thing the current wall color does well is make that beautiful kitchen sink pop and be a focal point in the entire kitchen – a stone foil to the steel fridge. Kudos on your beautiful kitchen!
