2013 Design Trend: Lace

As a hopeless romantic, I've had a love affair with lace for most of my adult life.
Lace curtains, lace tablecloths, lace embellished hand towels--at one time or another, I've had lace incorporated in to my decor.
Not so much now though.

Vincent Wolf
Elle Decor recently named lace as a design trend to watch for in 2013.
They said, "Your grandmother's tablecloth is now hip."

Valentino

At first I was surprised, but then it occurred to me that lace has been showing up in the fashion world a lot lately.

Balenciaga

Except for a few lace edged antique linen hand towels, our home doesn't have a bit of lace anymore, however my closet is full of it!

I love wearing black lace tops with jeans, or a black lace dress with boots, like I did when our daughter got married. She even paired a lace dress with a leather belt for her wedding.

That's the thing about lace, it looks best when paired with something rustic!

This rustic kitchen is made ever so romantic with the lace curtain in the background.

Just a touch of lace juxtaposed with rustic linen or burlap makes my heart skip a beat!

When I think of lace, I think "romantic..."
Leave it to Coco Chanel however to sum up her love of lace:

"I consider lace to be one of the prettiest imitations ever made of the fantasy of nature;
lace always evokes for me those incomparable designs which the branches and leaves of trees embroider across the sky, and I do not think that any invention of the human spirit
could have a more graceful or precise origin."
~Coco Chanel

Lace is one design trend I'm looking forward to seeing more of in 2013!
How about you?

Love the Chanel quote and beautiful images.

Guess for once I am getting close to cutting edge with lace in our dining room windows.:-) I love lace and do have some bits and pieces here and there.

Lovely post and what a great quote. 25 years ago I put lace curtains I ordered from Rue de France throughout my first home, biggest mistake I ever made was yard selling those!

Those terrific lace panels we see all over Europe are also practical. There are no window or door screens, so the lace panel is drawn across the opening to serve the purpose of keeping out flying insects and providing a bit of privacy while letting the lovely light filter inside. Love that!

I'm so glad you wrote this post. Every curtain in my cottage is lace. It's all I have and when watching some of the HGTV shows people always seem to comment "oh, it looks like an old grandma's house" and not in a good way either. Well, I am an old grandma and I was thinking maybe I should change, but now I know I'm OK as is. I love the quote from Coco. Thanks for sharing..Happy Monday..Judy

Delores --
I was at the Atlanta Design Center yesterday working for a client and I saw some breathtaking laces. The most I can talk her into is a sheared lace on the door between the kitchen and the garage. That panel in your first photo is beautiful. I love the rustic/refined look of using lace where you might not expect it, and I have it as curtains in my potting shed. The problem is.....I'm drawn to very expensive handmade lace. Figures!

I've always thought that lace is highlighted when it is paired with something more rustic. Lace top with jeans, lace table runners on a barn wood table.
I predict with the spotlight on this intricate designed fabric we will likely see a lot of eyelet fabric as well. Both fresh and romantic.

Love the quoute and all the beautiful images, especially your table. I am not a big lace gal but always appreciate it when done well in a room. Love the beautiful hand work that we saw when visiting Belgium this year, an amazing art.

I love it -- unfortunately sold a lot of it. I do have the family stuff -- glad I held onto that! I use some of it on tables at times -- maybe I will think about doing it more.

Beautiful quote. I'll always think of it now when I see a piece of lace. Great post!

YES YES YES, I am a lace lover! I still have some up and my closet is stocked full of lace blouses, bolero's tops and dresses! But I also have a ton in my linen closet bought from London lace and Rue de France in the 90's.No way could I have parted with it for anything. Thanks for this post! I'm glad I'm not the only one.
