A New Purpose For The Wet Bar

Sometimes I ask myself, why I kept the wet bar in the family room when we did the remodel.
Was it because there was one there already?
It seemed logical at the time.  But we've never used the dishwasher and the refrigerator is nice, but not necessary.

I've always had difficulty staging this space.
A bar is set up, along with glassware, but it just doesn't work.
My friend asked a question that got me to thinking:
"What if you used this space as a flower arranging and potting space?"

She suggested that I put the bar in the bookshelf on the opposite side of the room.
She also suggested that she come over and do it for me!
All I had to do was gather everything together...

 ...Like the concrete urns outside.
Bring them inside, fill them with orchids and flank them on either side of the sink.
Why didn't I think of that?

She brought baskets to organize the drawers with tools, moss and gardening supplies.

Then she started to organize and stage the zinc shelves.

Vases, planters and books were added.

Luckily, I had quite a few books on gardening and flower arranging.

The more she added, the more the space took on a whole new purpose.

Now when I bring home flowers from the grocery store, or even the flower mart, I can just bring them straight in from the garage to this room.  Everything is at the ready to make my arrangements and centerpieces.
But what about the bar?

It's now across the room in the bookshelf!

I actually like it better!

I found little lamps from Restoration Hardware Baby that are perfect to illuminate the bottles and glassware.
It's so romantic with them on at night.

Aged brass trays from Pottery Barn are perfect for holding the glassware and carafes and fit perfectly on the narrow shelves.

I'm loving the change in the family room!
A big thanks to my friend, organizer and stager extraordinaire.

What a very nice and very talented friend. You need to take a picture of the whole wall so we can see it in it's entirety. What i can see looks wonderful and how fun to have a designated spot for flowers and plants!! Looking good, D!!!

What a wonderful idea! I've pinned several of these. Love the bar in the bookcase and the idea of having all the potting and flower arranging things organized and at the ready. Kudos to your friend. You two make a great team. Love your style, Delores.

What a fabulous idea!! And you can use the refrigerator to keep your flowers fresh until you're ready to arrange them - and love the bar on the bookshelf, too a win-win!!

Love this transformation. We also have a wet bar, behind louvered doors, where this would work.

Thanks for passing on this great idea.

It's good to have such talented and helpful friends! I agree that sometimes seeing things from a different perspective and new "eyes" can make a big difference. Your new flower arranging station and wet bar look wonderful....great job!

It's amazing how another set of eyes can see something we can't! I like the idea for the new use of the wet bar area as a flower arranging and potting station. How fun that your friend wanted to do the job for you! Love the potted orchids there- what a great look!

Hi Gay,
The wallcovering is Madagascar grasscloth. Here is the link: http://designerwallcoverings.com/WallpaperStore/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=10485.
Not sure if it is still available though.

Delores, This idea is genius and the area is so well arranged. I see my favorite red urns which I also purchased when you told us about them so long ago! I use mine everywhere. No one would every suspect how inexpensive they were! You always inspire me, so thank you! Linda

look much better and make sense too. I would also put mirrors in the book shelf doors so it
can reflect the rest of the room. What do you think?

WOW! Both areas are amazing but the bookshelf bar absolutely knocks my socks off. Your friend is very generous with her talents. Talk about the gift that "keeps on giving"!!! I need my own "Tartan" liquor bottle! Now that wet bar area has a useful and beautiful purpose. Really, really nice! Thank you so much for sharing!
