Looking Back, Looking Forward

2018 was quite a year for us.
We came to the realization that we needed to go back home.
Luckily, selling the house we bought less than a year ago turned out to be a good idea.
We sold at the right time, and bought our new home also at the right time.
Timing is everything they say!

It has been such a joy to be back in the community where we raised our children, where our friends of 30 plus years are, and closer to our 96 year old mother.

Because we bought a fixer upper, I'm in my element remodeling our home and creating my vision for it.
We finished Phase 1 just before the holidays and are now looking forward to the next phase in 2019.
I predict this year is going to be challenging as we live through the dust and inconvenience of construction.

I've made a list of construction goals for 2019:

1.  Remodel the kitchen and add a powder room.

3.  Replace the rotten brick porch.

 4.  Replace the rotten deck.

5.  Landscape the front and back yards.

6.  Paint the exterior a whole new color!

On a personal level, I've made a few New Year's Resolutions:

1.  Read more books.
2.  Walk 30 minutes per day.
3.  Less time on my phone.
4.  More travel and adventures.

And finally, laugh more!

Wishing you all a happy and healthy 2019!

A Clean Slate

"Every man should be born again on the first day of January.
Start with a fresh page." ~Henry Ward Beecher

A fresh page or a clean slate.
January 1st is a chance to start over.
This year, believe that anything is possible...

I will try to do all these things!

2015 is going to be epic!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

The Ultimate List For 2014: #9 Have More Patience

I recently had one of those days that tried my patience.
Nothing turned out the way it was supposed to, but I kept reminding myself to be patient.

"Patience is the calm acceptance that things can happen in a different order than the one you had in mind."  ~David G. Allen

They say patience is a virtue and that good things come to those who wait!
Well, try telling that to your very impatient child who had his heart set on something, only to be very disappointed at the outcome.

"Patience is bitter, but its fruit is sweet."  ~Jean Jacques Rousseau

Things take time, so be patient I tell him.
Take a cue from nature, I tell him.

"Adopt the pace of nature, her secret is patience."  ~Ralph Waldo Emerson

"Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished."  ~Lao Tzu

I've really enjoyed taking the month of January to reflect and think about The Ultimate List For 2014, and I hope you have too--to officially launch the beginning of the year with some resolutions that are quite doable.
But let's not forget the last one on the list:
#10 Forget doing 'more.'
"Just try your best."
Here's to a fabulous year of doing our best!
Patiently!

(I captured this spectacular sunrise early one morning last year.  It looked like the sky was on fire!)

The Ultimate List For 2014: #8 Relax More

 Keep calm and relax.
Easier said than done, right?
We think about the past and worry about the future, a recipe for stress!
My mantra these days as I approach the big 6-0 at the speed of light is to concentrate on living in the moment and relax.

re-lax (re-laks) v.
1. To make less tense or rigid.
2. To relieve from nervous stress.
3. To seek rest or recreation.

All we have is now anyway.

For Mr. A, it's fishing.
But more than that, it's being on the river.
Although that's not my idea of relaxation, for him it is the ultimate!

"Stop a minute, relax where you are.
Relax your shoulders.
Shake your head and spine like a dog shaking off cold water.
Tell that imperious voice in your head to be still.
~Barbara Kingsolver

Me?
I'll take a hammock by the sea.
Just listening to the ocean's waves and breathing the salt air....Ahhhhh!
(Although I've only done this once in my life!)

"Tension is who you think you should be.
Relaxation is who you are."
 ~Chinese Proverb

Or sitting amongst a garden of flowers, breathing their scent and watching the birds.
That is relaxation to me.

"Sometimes the best thing that you can do is not think.
Not wonder.  Not imagine.  Not obsess.
Just breathe and have faith that everything will work out for the best."

Note to self:
Relax!
You are enough.
You have enough.
You do enough.

What do you do to relax?

The Ultimate List For 2014: #6 Clean More Often

This is my philosophy too.
If your house is too clean, your guests feel uncomfortable.
My house is clean, but not too clean.
We live it our house and it shows!
And that's about all I'm going to say about #6 on the list!

The Ultimate List For 2014: #5 Get More Organized

I could just throw in the towel on this one because I'm organizationally challenged!
But, for 2014 I will once again try and get it together.

I will tackle my pantry so that it will look like this...

...Instead of this!

I will tackle my kitchen junk drawer so that it looks like this...

 ...Instead of this!
We all have the proverbial junk drawer, but I have more than one!

I love the look of an organized cupboard or drawer but it just isn't a reality in our house.
I'd like to think it's because we have too much stuff, but also we have a big family and everything ends up either in the garage or is still in the closets.
It's time to get rid of it all!

Don't judge!
This is what happens when your garage is the dumping ground from your mother-in-law's downsizing, your four grown children's belongings and leftovers from college apartments and your husband's fishing and camping equipment.  Not to mention my problem with rugs and pillows.  And dishes!
It has also become the "staging area" for everything that is being purged from the home until it can be determined whether it is being donated or taken to the dump.

This is my garage goal.
To organize everything on shelving units like this one or similar.
Each shelf will have its own category; fishing, gardening, Christmas, extra dish storage and supplies.
Nothing in the middle, so all the rolled up rugs must be donated.
I know it can be done and little by little, I'm chipping away at it.

Are you organizationally challenged?
Or unlike me, do you possess the organizing gene?
I welcome any and all tips!

The Ultimate List For 2014: #4 Read More

As a self-proclaimed "bibliomaniac," I have no issue with number four on the Ultimate List.

As long as I can remember, I've been an avid reader.
We moved around a lot when I was a child, so books became my refuge, my loyal friends.

"I was raised among books, making invisible friends in pages that seemed cast from dust and whose smell I carry on my hands to this day."  ~Carlos Ruiz Zafon

However, reading hasn't been as much of a priority in the last couple of years, likely due to the time I spend on the computer.
Even belonging to a book club hasn't inspired me like it used to.
Don't get me wrong, we've read some wonderful books and I've enjoyed them, but I used to read at least a book a week before.
That is all going to change in 2014!

"It is likely I will die next to a pile of things I was meaning to read."  ~Lemony Snicket

In fact, I'm on a roll right now!
I read an interesting article which led me to an amazing book that I read, which led me to another similar book which I'm reading, which will lead me to a book that is sitting, waiting for me to read.
Kind of a trilogy if you will about a subject I never would have been interested in.  North Korea...

"The more you read, the more things you will know.  The more that you learn, the more places you will go."  ~Dr. Seuss

That's the thing with books.
They inspire us, they educate us, they open up our minds to worlds we could never know about otherwise...

...they take us back in time or into the future.
To lands across the ocean or out in space.

An adventure is awaiting.
Just open the page!
If you're also looking to read more in 2014, I have a few recommendations to get you started.

"One sure window into a person's soul is his reading list."  ~Mary Tabor

The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt is a big, juicy, ambitious novel that I could not put down.
It was our last R.E.A.D. Bookclub choice, and it held me until the very end.  Amazon named it the Number One Book in 2013!

I just finished this amazing book about the only person born in a North Korean concentration camp who escaped and lived to tell about it.
I normally do not read non-fiction, but this man's story of survival is amazing.

I'm in the middle of this one.  Another non-fiction, it's a book about ordinary people trying to survive in North Korea.
It's a great supplement to the book above.

This book is waiting for me to read.
A Pulitzer Prize winning novel about, you guessed it, North Korea.

And finally, this is our current R.E.A.D. Bookclub choice.
A book about ordinary lives in a fictitious Colorado town.
I'm finding it very boring, but am hanging it there.
Perhaps, the lives depicted here pale in comparison to the lives I'm reading about in "Nothing To Envy."

Now I want to hear your recommendations.
What books are on your nightstand, waiting to be read?

Do you also want to read more books in 2014?
Well then, let's do it!

The Ultimate List For 2014: #3 Get More Exercise

I have a million excuses for not exercising, but the bottom line is that I hate to exercise.  Period.
There I said it!

If I had an exercise routine, it would involve walking.
Walking is the one thing I don't mind doing, once I'm actually doing it.
Gyms?  I've joined a few with good intentions, usually around this time of year, only to stop going altogether after a few weeks.

No.  I don't run either!

I've finally realized that I can't hide from exercise any longer.

It's time to get off my blogger butt, off my Pinterest butt, off my computer butt and "just do it!"

Since #3 on my Ultimate List is to get more exercise, that could mean anything from a long walk once a week, to full on running, plus weight training.
I'm just going to take it a day at a time and do my best to get more exercise.
Who knows, I may even start to like it!

I'm going to keep calm, set realistic goals and keep a journal to chart my progress.
Besides Oscar, I've got a few friends that will periodically join me on a walk, but otherwise I find listening to music really helps.
The idea is to make it fun!

What is your favorite exercise routine?
I welcome any tips or pointers!
