Demolition Derby

This week was demolition week, starting with Monday when Carlos the Fabricator and his crew came to take out the granite.

It's amazing how painless it was.

I was hoping some of it would come out in large pieces so my friend could have a piece for his apartment kitchen. But, it came out in small puzzle pieces.

It was all gone by noon, without any damage to cabinets and floors.
I even have my subway backsplash still! Not even a crack or a chip!

After the granite was gone, his crew started making a template.

This involved outlining the counter with balsa wood and stapling together a pattern to lay over the stone. The inside area is blank so that the stone pattern can be seen and selected before cutting.

This sounds crazy, but I like the plywood almost better than the granite?

Just kidding. But it did lighten up the room.

On Wednesday, the demolition crew showed up to demo the two bathrooms.

Also painless! They were here and gone by early afternoon.

The downstairs bathroom after demo.

Ashley's bathroom after demo.

I kept the tub, but didn't realize the silicone from the shower door is nearly impossible to get off. Still working on it!

Now, the fun begins!

Delores, good luck with all of this. I've lived through this type of remodel. It's all worth the dust and inconvenience. ;-)

How exciting! I can't wait to see the finished pictures. In the first picture, I see a beautiful light fixture just outside the door. Can you tell me the manufacturer? I love it!

Try Goof Off or Krud Kutter to get that silicone off. Also you MIGHT be able to scrape it off if your tub is porcelain using a glass scraper (one of those little tools that has a single sided razor blade mounted in it). This reno is VERY EXCITING! Can't wait to see your finished product!

Hi, Delores,
I am amazed and impressed by how much you are taking on all at once. But, then again, the pain will be over all at once as well. Good luck and enjoy the process.
Best...Victoria

YAY!! I love this kind of stuff! Demolition and renewal! They got a lot done quickly! That's the only way to do it!! Ever since the movie Something's Gotta Give I've been saying how much I loved that kitchen! I'm betting you are going with the soapstone!! :-) I have heard though that as it ages it's patina changes. Can't wait to see what you picked!
