The Books At Boxwood House

"A room without books is like a body without a soul."  ~Cicero
I couldn't agree more.  One can design a room with fabulous wallcoverings, luxurious fabrics and elegant antiques, but if it doesn't contain books, then something is missing.

When staying at The Boxwood House, I had time to notice all the details in the house.  There are many, but what really stood out were all the books in every room.

Oh, and glasses!  Every nightstand and side table had a stack of books and a pair of reading glasses.

Many of the books in the dining room are about San Francisco or California and its history.
For those guests visiting from another state or country, this would be fascinating.
I find it fascinating and I live here!

There are books about the 1906 earthquake, books about the gold rush, books about the wine country...

...and books about Abraham Lincoln.
The owners of The Boxwood House are obviously interested in history, both local and American history and have been collecting books for years.

How wonderful to have a place to lovingly display them.

For a home that isn't lived in day to day and used as a vacation rental, the books have given it warmth and also a soul.

As I wondered around during my stay, noticing all the details of this home, so beautifully decorated and curated, I imagined other guests staying here, enjoying the view, enjoying special events with friends and enjoying life.
I thought, The Boxwood House truly represents all things home!

"Good friends, good books and a sleepy conscience:  this is the ideal life."  ~Mark Twain

I love your final quote! I love books and I love to decorate with them. I love all the colors of the binders and book jackets. Whenever I buy a book on-line (an ebook) I always miss seeing the cover and I have trouble remembering the name of the book - because I never saw its cover - or at least I didn't see it every time I picked up the book.

Hi Delores, I am really enjoying this tour of Boxwood House. I am also a lover of books and their interesting covers, which can be beautiful in a room and make me reach for one to open and explore. I have cringed so often over the mad trend for ripping off the covers and truly hope that is over! Happy Birthday~~I'll be there in a few years too and hopefully I will reach it with the same class as several blogging friends have this year! Linda

Hi Delores:

I could not agree with you more. To me books are comforting. When you enter a room with piles of books it has a calming, peaceful effect. I have piles of books all over my house. Reading a hard cover book maybe going out of style, but I still prefer them over reading a book on my IPad. You can't decorate with a IPad!

We have sooo many books. We actually had to get rid of a lot of them. I don't often keep paperbacks, but do keep hardbacks, especially vintage ones, and books on history, geography, and gardens.

Books can most definitely give a home soul. Each one of these vignettes is lovely, Delores. We have lots of books in our home, but not many vintage ones. Wish I had kept more of my parents books, but lack of shelf space was the deciding factor.
Hope all is good with you.

Such a pretty post. I have books everywhere too, I agree with you -- they do give a home soul.

I wanted to email you --- are you up for another Tartan Parade in October?
Thought it was high time that we bring it back and there is no time like a fall plaid post! Are you in?

Email me and let me know at evergroveinteriors@comcast.net

Thanks Delores!
