The Old Redwood

This magnificent Sequoia Redwood tree sits at the edge of our driveway, and is over 100 years old. It is definitely one of my "favorite things."

It provides a home for all kinds of creatures like this little guy!

So, I put this vintage St. Francis statue at the bottom of the tree. He is another one of my "favorite things," as he is my favorite saint, and the patron saint of animals and the environment. I like to think he is watching out for all the squirrels and birds living in the tree above.

"I think that I shall never see
A poem lovely as a tree.
A tree whose hungry mouth is prest
Against the earth's sweet flowing breast..."
~Joyce Kilmer, "Trees," 1914

I'm joining Laurie at Bargain Hunting with Laurie for "Favorite Things Saturday."
Be sure to visit her beautiful blog!

Another favorite blog party is "Weekly Words to Live By" at Notes From a Cottage Industry, which I'm participating in today. Stop in for lots of inspiration.

That tree has such tremendous beauty! I'd cherish it too! I LOVE that you put the St. Francis Statue there! We live in a subdivision but our backyard is like a weird little creature haven...and we LOVE it! The birds all congregate around the ponds waterfall in the morning and I even saw a bunny sipping water from the side today. I'm sure the Koi were wondering what that was! I feed the squirrels in the pines behind us and I LOVE your photo!

Enjoy your weekend.

Your photos are fantastic, Delores! Love that huge red tree, so grand! I have a St. Francis by my tree also. I broke my first one and I had to replace him cause I love him too. We have so many critters here too, lots of squirrels and chipmunks who are so cute....Christine

What a sweet post. I've always, always wanted to visit the Redwoods in CA. I love how you have your St. standing guard at the trunk of the tree. Lovely!

Delores, I remember when we went to San Francisco several years ago and we rented a car and drove to the redwood forest. I could not believe how large those trees are. We felt like to little tiny ants standing next to them. That is one majestic tree. Love the pic of the cute squirrel.

Delores, Love these picts of the squirel. we have Cypress trees lining our back fence and I was so excited to see that we now have squirrels. I have always wondered how they got here. They just all the sudden appeared. We crack up watching them hang on the pole with their feet to reach the bird feeder, too funny. Love St Francis at the base of your beautiful tree, that is so touching. I love seeing your favorite things my friend, Hugs Kathysue

Such a magnificent tree - must be home to lots of squirrels and birds, all of which bring life to the garden. I so miss the trees we had to remove in Jan. this year. I still have plenty in back so just as much wildlife, but will miss the shade on the front porch this Summer - am instead hanging gauzy drapery panels at one end - looks quite romantic in a shabby chic way!!

Lovely St. Francis - perfect spot to place him.

Happy weekend Delores.

Oh, I am in love with your tree. I know it's weird. When I was growing up in the Midwest with farms all around me, there was a big tree at the end of our property. I would walk through the field to get to it and just sit and think. Every time I read "The Giving Tree", I think of my tree. I lived next door to my grandparents and their house was destroyed in a fire. I drove by a few years ago and I had to look hard to find my tree. I wish I would have stopped and asked if I could visit it but thought the would call the white jackets. I won't give you my address so you won't call them on me. I should note that I had to play b myself as a child so that may explain my relationship with this tree.

Love St. Francis...I used to have one in my flowerbed but I think it got left behind in the move...so sweet that it's tucked in like that...I love old trees too. They have such personality. We had two lovely old oaks claimed by Hurricane Ike...I miss them so.
