Rest In Peace, Little Guy

This morning at 8:00 am, Dexter was put to rest.
After years of debilitating seizures, his brain and body had just had enough.
Rest in peace, little guy.
We love you.

"He is my other eyes that can see above the clouds; my other ears that hear above the winds. He is the part of me that can reach out into the sea...

He has told me a thousand times over that I am his reason for being;

by the way he rests against my leg;

by the way he thumps his tail at my smallest smile; by the way he shows his hurt when I leave without taking him. (I think it makes him sick with worry when he is not along to care for me.) When I am wrong, he is delighted to forgive...

When I am angry, he clowns to make me smile. When I am happy, he is joy unbounded.

When I am a fool, he ignores it. When I succeed, he brags. Without him, I am only another man...

With him, I am all-powerful. He is loyalty itself. He has taught me the meaning of devotion. With him, I know a secret comfort and a private peace. He has brought me understanding where before I was ignorant. His head on my knee can heal my human hurts...

His presence by my side is protection against my fears of dark and unknown things.

He has promised to wait for me... whenever... wherever - in case I need him. And I expect I will - as I always have. He is my dog." - Gene Hill

Dear Delores, I am so sorry to hear about Dexter. I know how much we love our dogs and how truly they are a member of our family. They give so much love and ask for so little. It is unfortunate we can have them in our lives for only a little while. As Dexter surely did for you, I am sure you made his life a joy.
Sending you love...Victoria

I am so incredibly sorry about Dexter. Losing a pet, a treasured member of your family is so difficult. What a wonderful poignant tribute to him...he looks like he lived one happy life and was clearly loved dearly. They truly make the best, most trusting, friends that give us such an enormous amount of unconditional love. Sending a hug your way.

*** Dearest Delores~

I just saw this, and there's absolutely NO WAY I can tell you how badly I feel for you & the rest of the family.

At "my age", I have been thru this many times, so I really D*O KNOW and FEEL your pain, my friend. I ALSO know there is, unfortunately, nothing any of us can say, do or give to you that will make the loss of your PRECIOUS DEXTER any less painful. To say that "it takes a long time to heel & accept the loss" is an understatement... one that I personally never say, as this is TOO big of a loss to trivialize...

I sincerely HOPE, and like to B*E*L*I*E*V*E, that your darling DEXTER, w/ that cute nickname of "TAR" (I'd love to hear THAT story some time!), has already been greeted/welcomed by my/our "kids" already "up there" for quite a while now...

Picture Dexter ALL HEALTHY, and in absolutely NO PAIN, Delores.. he's running n' romping & even occassionally barking with joy, like one of our dogs now does~ our Sam, Mac Arthur, BD and Mikey will WARMLY WELCOME HIM and show him "the ropes" (and where the closest fire hydrant is!). He'll ALWAYS love his "MOMMY", and undoubtedly knows he was ONE... BELOVED... PRECIOUS BEING!!!

I'll include your Dexter in my "pet prayers" tonight & for a while too, and YOU, Delores, will be at the top of my nightly "people prayers".

Our "Belle" and pup "Marnie" send loving licks & big warm, cuddly hugs to you, as do Jim and I.

XO,
Linda

Message From Valhalla
You were with me to the very end and even after I had "gone" you held me, and as my soul left my body and I looked down and saw you crying, I wanted so much to tell you that I understood. You did this for me.
I tried to tell you in my own way that it was time for me to leave, and I thank you for understanding. No other will take my place, but those I left behind will need your love and affection as I have had.
You still think of me, and there are times you try to hide your tear-filled eyes but please be happy and think not of sadness, but of how I made you happy and made you laugh at the funny and smart things I did.
There are no fences in Valhalla, for no one has the desire to "dig out".
There are no thunderstorms in Valhalla, therefore fear is never present.
There are no fights in Valhalla. Everyone is congenial.
There is no hunger. There is no thirst. There is much to explore. Many of us who are older take care of the little ones and guide them. It's fun watching them run with their ears flopping and their curly tails wagging.
We have four seasons in Valhalla, and most of us agree, winter is our favorite.
So you see, my loved one, I am very happy.
When it comes time for my friends to leave, I will meet them at the gates of Valhalla, and I will acquaint them with this beautiful and serene place, and I will take care of them for you.
Thank you for loving me, caring for me, and having the courage to let me go with dignity.
Jane S. Morris
My condolances to you and yours.

I don't think anyone has posted this; but this is the thing that has comforted me; and helped me fill the holes in my heart; and my husband's heart. We adore our animals; and are bereft when we lose one. This has helped us.

" The Rainbow Bridge"

"There is a bridge connecting Heaven and Earth. It is called the rainbow bridge because of its many colors. Just this side of the rainbow bridge, there is a land of meadows, hills and valleys with lush green grass.

When a beloved pet dies, the pet goes to this place. There is always food and water and warm spring weather. The old and frail animals are young again. Those who are maimed are made whole again. They play all day with each other.

There is only one thing missing. They are not with their special person who loved them on earth. So, each day they run and play until the day comes when one suddenly stops playing, and looks up! The nose twitches! The ears are up! The eyes are staring!! And this one suddenly runs from the group!

You have been seen, and when you and your special friend meet, you take him or her into your arms and embrace. Your face is kissed again and again and again, and you look once more into the eyes of your trusting pet.

Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together, never again to be separated. "

I am weeping when I write this. I am so sorry I don't know who wrote it; but I can tell you that I believe it!!!

That was such a lucky, beloved dog. You were so lucky to have him for such a long life; he was so lucky to have you. Which just hurts so much. My heart goes out to you.

So sorry Delores. I had a dog that had seizures too and that was awful because our dog would be normal 99% of the time. My husband and I kept telling ourselves if she can deal with it, then so can we. We let it go on for years and had her heavily medicated, which did not really improve matters. Finally, she had eight seizures in one day and we had to put her to sleep. It was one of the hardest decisions we've ever made. I loved seeing pictures with your dog in them. He was so cute. Again, so sorry for your loss.

I just recently found your wonderful blog and am enjoying your posts/style from another Northern Californian - I'm in Marin. I just saw the archived post about the loss of your beautiful "TT" Dexter. I also have black/white Tibetans, two of whom I've lost in the last year. Some days it feels like more than your heart can bear. Thank you for posting the poem by Gene Hill - I'd been looking for it, read it some time ago, and now has so much more meaning. Beau & BJ were pure loyalty and love, and now, "They are my other eyes that can see above the clouds; my other ears that hear above the winds. They are the part of me that can reach out into the sea..."

I hope time has softened your sadness - I'm still working on it.

Thank you again for your wonderful blog!
